The 65-year-old leaves Real Madrid after a decorated second spell, in which he led Los Blancos to two La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies among his honours.

The record five-time Champions League winner now ventures into international management for the first time.

Ancelotti becomes the first overseas coach in Brazil’s history and replaces Dorival Junior, following a poor start to World Cup qualification.

Though Brazil are almost certain to secure qualification to the 2026 tournament, the Selecao are 10 points behind Argentina and were thrashed 4-1 by their arch-rivals in March. Brazil have progressed past the quarter-finals of the World Cup just once since last winning the trophy in 2002.

Ancelotti leaves Real Madrid after a disappointing campaign. Defeat to Barcelona on Sunday all but ended the club’s hopes of retaining the La Liga title. Xabi Alonso has agreed a deal to replace his former manager at the Bernabeu next season.
