Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti responded to questions about the uncertain future of the club's Brazilian forward Rodrygo by pointing out that "many, many" players would like to have the honour of playing for the reigning European and Spanish champions.

Rodrygo has been the subject of reported interest from Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal this month. These rumours come hot on the heels of speculation suggesting that Al Ahli are lining up a record-shattering €300m (£250m) bid for his teammate for club and country, Vinicius Junior.

When confronted with these pieces of gossip, Ancelotti cryptically replied: "What I see, as well as what I hear, is that there are many who would like to be in Rodrygo's place, as in Vinicius', because there are many players who want to play in this club, in this team, with this shirt. Many, many.

"I don't like to give names, but there are a lot of players who want to come here. Some, even, that nobody would suspect. Because this is the history and the strength of this club."

Ancelotti refused to confirm that the club had concluded their business in the transfer window, ultimately settling with their current squad after multiple bids for Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold were rejected.

However, the Italian coach did admit: "What I see is that those who are here are very happy and want to stay as long as possible. They want to win titles, contribute."

The veteran champion also hailed Rodrygo's willingness to play out of position for the benefit of the collective. "He is a complete player and, although we are aware that he prefers to play on the left, someone, for the good of the team, has to make sacrifices. And Rodrygo has always done so. He has always put the good of the team first."

Real Madrid were paired with Manchester City in the inaugural Champions League knockout play-off round after Ancelotti's press conference on Friday.
