Carlo Ancelotti uses Barcelona’s red card mistake vs Monaco as reference for Real Madrid | OneFootball

Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has on Friday highlighted the costly mistake made by arch rivals Barcelona in their Champions League meeting with Monaco as an opportunity for his own players to learn.

Barca, of course, were put to the sword on the continent late last night.

After making the trip to France for the club’s European season opener, Hansi Flick’s troops were ultimately put to the sword by two goals to one.

As much was set in motion inside the opening ten minutes at the Stade Louis II, when Eric García was sent for an early bath.

Left badly short by goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen’s pass out from the back, Eric was unlucky to stumble into the breaking Takumi Minamino, culminating in a straight red card.

With this error still fresh in the minds of Spanish football fans, the subject of his own side’s at-times ropy efforts to play out from defence thus far this season was in turn put to the aforementioned Carlo Ancelotti, on Friday.

And, in his response, Real Madrid’s headmaster used Barcelona’s miscommunication as an example of just how costly as much can prove to be, explaining:

”They (opponents) have created too many opportunities against us. It’s an issue that we’re evaluating, we’ve conceded and they’ve created too many opportunities for us. We’ve failed to get out from the back, as happened yesterday against Barça, which cost Eric García the expulsion.”

Ancelotti continued:

”They’ve created opportunities against us because we failed with the ball, not because of our positioning. I think that to avoid this it doesn’t mean that we have to defend better, but rather play the ball as long as possible. The solution is a long ball, sometimes.”
