Carlos Acevedo reveals dream of moving to Europe | OneFootball

Santos Laguna goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo admitted he continues to dream about a move abroad, but highlighted the inherent difficulties that come with the idea “we will have to be realistic.”

Acevedo has been with the Liga MX club for the entirety of his professional career, standing as one of the team’s greatest homegrown success stories.

He joined the academy at the age of 10, and though he was dropped twice, Acevedo returned each time with a new determination to make the senior team. The goalkeeper finally broke into the Under-20 squad in 2015, before going on to make the first team one year later.

The Mexican national team figure now serves as the starting goalkeeper under head coach Eduardo Fentanes, leading the club to an 8W-7L-11D record and six clean sheets during the 2022 Clausura. His performances on and off the field also earned him the captain’s armband.

Though he remains committed to Santos, Acevedo longs for a greater challenge.

“As long as I can give it a chance, it is a dream of mine to be able to play in Europe, but we will have to be realistic. Today I am in Santos, happy with what I am experiencing and focused on having a good tournament, on being among the first four, just like we did the previous tournament,” he said.

Acevedo recently signed a contract extension with the Liga MX side, keeping him at the club through 2027. But if an opportunity came around, he would consider it.

“I would have to see an important sports project. Maybe I would sacrifice an economic part to make sure it's a serious and sports-driven project.”

For now, the goalkeeper will remain with Santos Laguna in Bilbao, Spain as the team undergoes preseason training. The club is set to be preparing for the Copa de Mexico tournament as well, a preseason competition between eight Liga MX teams starting on December 12.

The Liga MX transfer window opens on January 4, while the 2023 Clausura kicks off on January 6.
