Lee Carsley has cast doubt on his chances of becoming England’s permanent head coach after a 2-1 defeat to Greece at Wembley.

England were stunned in their UEFA Nations League clash as Greece claimed a first-ever win over the Three Lions.

Benfica forward Vangelis Pavlidis scored both goals for the visitors, including a 94th-minute winner after Jude Bellingham had looked like rescuing a result for England with an equaliser just minutes earlier.

Greece move three points clear at the top of the group with a perfect record after three games, while the optimism that surrounded Carsley’s first camp as interim boss has been dented.

Carsley admits he was surprised by the reaction to his opening wins as England manager last month and said he has not thought about taking the role permanently.

The 50-year-old said he would not rule himself out of the running but admitted that expects to return to his post as England u-21 manager.

“I was quite surprised after the last camp in terms of ‘the job is mine’ and ‘it’s mine to lose’ and all the rest of it,” he said at his post-match press conference.

“My remit has been clear from the start – I’m doing three camps. There are three games left and then hopefully I’ll be going back to the Under-21. It has almost no impact.

“I said at the start that I wouldn’t rule myself in or out, and that is still the case. I’m comfortable in my position where I am and the remit is clear.

“I’m comfortable and confident with that. After the first camp I didn’t get too excited or believe too much, I’m very aware this is one of the best jobs in the world in terms of having the chance of actually winning a major competition.”
