SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras – CD Marathón defeated LA Firpo 1-nil in the 2024 Central American Cup on Wednesday at the Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
Marathón claimed its first win in the team’s debut campaign. As a result, the Honduran club improved to three points in Group B.
Iván López had an early chance for the hosts inside the penalty area in the 6’, forcing a save from LA Firpo goalkeeper Misael Erazo.
The hosts came close to finding the opener with two opportunities in the 33’, but Erazo again responded to keep the match scoreless.
A long-range attempt from López in the 63’ resulted in a bounce off the crossbar as the two teams continued searching for the opening goal in the second half.
Ken Sandoval struck inside the box in the 84’, but his chipped attempt was just wide and hit the outside netting as the visitors threatened to take a late winner.
Damin Ramírez gave Marathón the match-winning goal in the 90’+6 from a long-range free kick.
Marathón will close out its participation against Alianza FC on August 27 in San Pedro Sula. LA Firpo concluded its participation in the 2024 edition after playing its fourth and final group stage fixture.
