Diego ForlĂĄn has officially announced his retirement from football at the age of 40.
The former Manchester United, Atlético Madrid, Inter Milan and Uruguay striker was last seen playing for Hong Kong side Kitchee, with his final appearance coming in May last year.
âIt hasnât been easy, I didnât want the time to come, but I knew it was going to come,â he told Telemundo on Tuesday.
âI have decided to stop playing football professionally.â
In his prime, ForlĂĄn was an absolute monster in front of goal and though his big money move to Old Trafford in 2002 didnât quite go to plan, he did score some stunners for the Red Devils.
Such as this one in the Champions League âŠ
His time in LaLiga â where he played for both AtlĂ©tico and Villarreal â also yielded some stunners âŠ
One of the highlights of ForlĂĄnâs career was the Golden Ball he was awarded for his goals at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa âŠ
And the veteran was still doing bits during his short spell with Indian Super League side Mumbai City back in 2016.
âHistoric for Uruguayan football,â wrote ForlĂĄnâs former international colleague Luis SuĂĄrez on Twitter.
âGrateful for all the unforgettable moments you made all Uruguayans live, both in the national team and in all the teams you played.
âI will always be grateful for what you taught me, both on and off the field, a dream to have played with one of my idols. You will always be a legend in Uruguay. A lot of success in your new challenges, friend.â
Happy retirement Diego.
