According to Record Sport, KV Mechelen are set to bring Stephen Welsh in on loan. The Celtic defender is expected to be the sides first January signing as they look to add some depth to an injured back line. The 24-year-old has only made two appearances for the Glasgow side this season and will certainly get the chance to earn more playing time out on loan. KV Mechelen could certainly do with some defensive reinforcements. Summer signings Zinho Vanheusden and Jules Van Cleemput have been unable to get over the injuries that have plagued their careers so far. Despite these, and numerous other injuries, the side have a real shot of a top six finish and European football. The hope is that Welsh can come in provide some quality in defensive areas to ensure the injuries are not too damaging to the clubs season so far.
Welsh made his debut for the Celtic first team during the 2019/2020 season. He also spent time that year on loan at Greenock Morton. The most appearances he made during a single season for the side were during the 2021/2022 campaign, where he played 24 games and scored twice. Welsh has a contract with Celtic until 2027.
