Celtic have informed Ewan Henderson that he is free to leave Parkhead in the January transfer window.

That’s according to a report by The Scottish Sun, who claim that Ange Postecoglou has told the 21-year-old attacking midfielder that he is free to seek a move away from Celtic this month, as the Bhoys will not be renewing his current contract at Parkhead – which is set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

The report goes on to state that the former Scotland U21 international is already attracting the interest of fellow Premiership side Hibernian, in addition to having further unnamed options as potential new suitors.

While it is true that Henderson has never fully established himself as a first-team regular at Parkhead since breaking through into the senior squad, sanctioning the sale of the midfielder this January could nevertheless be viewed as something of a mistake by Postecoglou.

Indeed, the £225k-rated man highly impressed for Celtic in his one outing under the management of the 56-year-old Bhoys boss, scoring the winner against Real Betis in the club’s 3-2 Europa League victory towards the beginning of December, earning a SofaScore match rating of 6.8 for his efforts in the European tie.

Furthermore, with the Hoops having been hit with a number of muscle injuries so far this season, Celtic’s desperate lack of depth in attacking midfield has been thrown into the spotlight, with Henderson and Tom Rogic being Postecoglou’s only natural options in the position.

While the player who Liam Henderson dubbed an “incredible” talent may well not have shown Postecoglou enough to earn a new contract at Parkhead, allowing the midfielder to leave for what will more than likely be a minimal fee this January rather than retaining the services of the £3.3k-per-week earner until the end of the season, would indeed appear to be something of a grave error by the Greek-Australian coach.

After all, the 56-year-old could be leaving himself extremely short of attacking midfield options over what is sure to be a testing second half of the season.
