Signing a defensive midfielder seems to be near the top of Celtic's wishlist heading into the summer transfer window. They have already been linked with quite a few of them in recent weeks. Kalidou Sidibe of Guingamp, Wataru Endo of Liverpool and Elvis Rexhbecaj of FC Augsburg are three names that come to mind almost immediately in this respect.
But it looks like Celtic have actually tried to sign a defensive midfielder recently. And it was not any of those three.
As reported by Carlos Ayats Perez, Levante have agreed to transfer Giorgi Kochorashvili to Sporting CP for €6 million fixed plus €1.5 million in variables. The club, which last week rejected an offer from Celtic, also keeps 15% of a future move.
Kochorashvili currently plays in La Liga 2 with Levante. He will be joining Sporting CP at the end of the season.
The fact that Sporting CP were ready to sign a player from La Liga 2 for that kind of a transfer fee just goes to show how impressive Kochorashvili has been for Levante in recent times. Unfortunately for Celtic, they were not able to get a deal done for the Georgian international.
Kochorashvili is a defensive midfielder. But he can play further up the pitch as a central midfielder as well and in a few other positions in the middle of the park.
It is pretty clear though that Celtic are looking to strengthen in the middle of the park this summer. So, keep an eye out on potential midfield signings from the Hoops at the end of the current campaign.
One has to wonder whether that hints towards a potential exit as well. Reo Hatate is someone who has been linked with a move away for a while.
