Change needed – Leandro Trossard is simply not working as an Arsenal starter

If Leandro Trossard starts versus Chelsea on Sunday, Mikel Arteta would certainly be asking for trouble from the Gooners.

Trossard had his worst Arsenal perfomance on Saturday when Arsenal lost 1-0 to Newcastle. The Belgian was a spectator in that game, giving the impression that the Gunners were playing with fewer players.

Against Inter Milan, the former Brighton man once again didn’t justify his selection.

After a poor showing against Newcastle, Arsenal needed to not only improve their performance but also return to winning ways.

Anyone who watched the match would agree that they played well, particularly in the second half of the game, but their struggles in the final third did hold them back. A 1-0 loss unfairly rewarded their efforts.

Even though the referee didn’t award the Gunners a clear penalty and gave Inter Milan one for their goal, the Arsenal attack could have performed better.

Given the go-ahead to start, Trossard undoubtedly had the chance to remind Gooners of his brilliance, but that wasn’t the case. Arsenal were expected to attack the last line, attempt to win duels, and hit shots, but Trossard fails to accomplish any of these tasks.

With his experience and desire for a key role, it is so disappointing to see him fail to impact games as he should. It’s concerning that a player who was scoring goals for fun last season has only managed one goal in 14 games.

Arteta is really testing some Gooners patience; for weeks there have been calls for him to give Ethan Nwaneri a chance, and he hasn’t.

Don’t you think we would much rather gamble on Nwaneri doing that (what Trossard is doing) than whatever the 29-year-old has been doing these past few weeks?

In the match against Inter, he failed to make a shot on target, conceded possession eight times, and only made two crucial passes.

Mikel Arteta continues to play him, but each time it becomes clearer, Trossard performs better as a sub. When last has he performed as a starter?

If not Nwaneri, Arteta should consider starting Gabriel Jesus or Raheem Sterling in his line-up against Chelsea instead of Trossard.
