Mat Sadler’s side overcame final-day heartbreak to defeat Chesterfield 4-1 over two legs, booking their place in the League Two play-off final at Wembley.

Lakin gave his Walsall side some breathing room after opening the scoring in the second leg, busting a gut to dart into the box and head home from close range, highlighting just a few of the 26-year-old’s key attributes as a player.

It was just Lakin’s fourth goal of the season, but by far the most important.

Taking to X after the match, the goalscorer posted a picture of himself in the middle of celebration, complemented by a rousing battle cry.

“Special night that I can’t put into words! Unreal you Saddlers fans, See you at Wembley 😍❤” read the caption.

Lakin only joined Walsall at the start of the season, but will hope to cap off his maiden campaign with the club in perfect fashion.

The midfielder has played more of a rotational role in recent weeks, but that won’t matter now, after crowning himself in play-off semi-final glory.

Walsall can salvage their season at Wembley

If the Saddlers end the 2024/25 season with promotion to League One at Wembley, then the team and fanbase will reflect upon the campaign as one that almost couldn’t be written as a Hollywood script.

At their most dominant, Walsall enjoyed a 12-point lead over second place, but between the end of January and the end of the season, Mat Sadler's Saddlers only won three matches, one of which was on the final day against Crewe Alexandra.

This eventually led to the club missing out on automatic promotion, an eventuality that was once thought almost impossible. However, the team have used the experience to motivate themselves and use it to energise the camp throughout the play-offs.

With Chesterfield now dispatched, focus turns to a date with destiny at the home of English football. AFC Wimbledon will make up the opposition, pitting the fourth and fifth-placed sides in League Two against each other.

The division’s top scorers have what it takes to achieve eternal glory at Wembley, but must make sure their defence stays tight to prevent Wimbledon returning to the third-tier for the first time in three years.

Time will tell who clinches promotion in the League Two play-off final, but one thing is for sure – Mat Sadler and Co. will enjoy a huge sigh of relief if they are victorious at Wembley.
