Jayden Stockley is receiving transfer interest at Charlton Athletic this month, after what has been a very challenging first half of the season for the 29-year-old.

Several League One and Two clubs are monitoring the striker’s availability, namely Gillingham, according to Football Insider.

Stockley scored 20 goals in all competitions last season, despite spending some time out injured, and seemed to thrive in Johnnie Jackson’s direct style of play.

However, with those methods changing significantly this season under Ben Garner and Dean Holden, the former Bournemouth man has not been able to affect games as much as he would have liked.

Having started 20 League One games, Stockley has found the net just twice, with one of those goals coming from the penalty spot.

The return to fitness of Miles Leaburn, 19, in the last few weeks has seen Stockley drop to the bench, with Holden handing the captain’s armband to George Dobson on a full time basis.

If it was not for the Addicks’ striker injury issues Stockley probably would have been dropped earlier, and though he is a reliable option for the club, they are clearly not getting the best out of him at the moment, and as a fit for the 29-year-old, there are probably better suited clubs out there.

The likelihood is that Stockley is one of the Addicks’ higher earners in the squad, having been signed from Preston North End for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2021, following a loan spell at The Valley.

His contract runs until the end of next season, which could make a permanent exit this month a little less feasible, although we are yet to understand the financial muscle that Gillingham possess under new ownership.

From the outside looking in, it seems unlikely that Stockley heads to Priestfield Stadium on a permanent transfer, due to the risk of becoming a National League player next season, when he was one of the more dangerous third tier strikers last term.

Time will tell, but it could be beneficial for the Addicks to get him off the wage bill in some capacity.
