Charlton Athletic are interested in Coventry City’s Matty Godden as they look to bring in more attacking options in the summer window.
The 32-year-old started out with Scunthorpe when they were a Football League side, but he struggled to get regular game time at Glanford Park, so various non-league moves followed on loan, before he eventually joined Ebbsfleet on a permanent basis.
After impressing over two seasons with the Kent-based side, Godden earned a move back to the professional levels with Stevenage, where he continued to be prolific.
Another transfer followed to Peterborough United, and he then signed for Coventry, then a League One outfit, in the summer 2019, and he has played a key part in their rise over the past five years.
Godden starred as they won promotion, and he featured regularly for Mark Robins in the past few years as the Sky Blues established themselves in the second tier.
He has made 34 league appearances this season, scoring six goals, with Coventry just missing out on the play-offs, but they did enjoy a magical FA Cup run that ended in a dramatic sem-final defeat to Man Utd.
Even though Godden has been part of the team this season, he perhaps isn’t starting the number of games he would want.
That’s down to the excellent form of Ellis Simms and Haji Wright, which means Godden has been mainly used from the bench in the past few months.
Therefore, with the experienced forward entering the final 12 months of his contract this summer, a departure in the window can’t be ruled out.
And, South London Press reporter Rich Cawley has revealed that the Addicks are targeting Godden as Nathan Jones looks to strengthen the squad ahead of his first full season in charge.
“Coventry City's Matt Godden is a player that has come up on Charlton’s radar. Still contracted to the Sky Blues for another year, so no guarantees he is available. Would be heavy League One interest if Godden was able to make an exit.”
It promises to be an exciting time for Charlton fans, as the team has made significant strides since Jones was appointed, and we know he is a manager with excellent pedigree at this level.
He will have used the past few months to assess the squad, and it’s clear that they do need more firepower if they are to be promotion contenders next season, which has to be the aim.
On paper, Godden would appear to be the ideal signing.
He has proven himself at this level in the past, and he has experience of winning promotion, something that Jones will value as part of the squad. Most importantly, though, he would bring goals to the team, and he could transform the attack.
You can’t imagine he will be desperate to leave a Coventry City side that are doing very well in the Championship, but more game time for the Londoners is sure to appeal.
