Djordje Petrovic (25), currently on loan at RC Strasbourg Alsace from Chelsea, could travel with Enzo Maresca’s side to the USA this summer for the FIFA Club World Cup, The Daily Telegraph reports.
BBC Sport reported in March that Petrovic was set to return to Chelsea this summer. Upon his return to Stamford Bridge, he was expected to compete for the No.1 jersey along with Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen. However, speaking in a pre-match press conference last week, the Serbian alluded to a stay at fellow-BlueCo-owned side Strasbourg, especially in the event that the Ligue 1 side secure qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League. Liam Rosenior’s men are currently sixth, just one point away from OGC Nice, who occupy the final Champions League spot.
However, The Telegraph understands that the plan remains to bring Petrovic back to Stamford Bridge ahead of a sort of summer trial. Both he and Mike Penders (currently at KRC Genk) will be back at Chelsea in time for the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup. The pair could travel with the squad as they look to secure a place in the side ahead of next season. It is an open race for the No.1 jersey with Sanchez and Jorgensen also under evaluation. No further recruitment is expected in this sector of the pitch at Chelsea.
