Chelsea eventually earned a comfortable three-goal lead in Poland to take back to Stamford Bridge following Noni Madueke's brace.
Initially, Enzo Maresca's side struggled in Poland with familiar symptoms that fans may have seen in their recent league outings.
However, Premier League quality was eventually evident in Warsaw with Chelsea taking a 1-0 lead early into the second half.
Captain Reece James took a shot from outside the area with just under five minutes into the second half that goalkeeper Kacper Tobiasz was able to stop. However, the Legia shot-stopper's save went straight to youngster Tyrique George who finished on the rebound.
The second goal came from Legia unable to play out from the back which led to Jadon Sancho able to lay the ball off to second-half substitute Noni Madueke to finish.
It should have been 3-0 when Rafal Augustyniak was penalised for a foul on Christopher Nkunku which led to a Chelsea penalty. However, Nkunku's resulting penalty was well saved by Tobiasz.
That save didn't prevent a Chelsea third for long though, just seconds later Sancho was able to drive at the defence and lay the ball off for Madueke to seal the win.
From that point on, Chelsea held their nerve to take back a commanding three-goal advantage to Stamford Bridge for the next leg.
