Chelsea fans with a trip to St James’ Park.
A Wednesday night 7.45pm kick-off against Newcastle United.
At stake, a place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
This game following on only three days after Chelsea 2 Newcastle 1 at Stamford Bridge.
So what is the mood like amongst Chelsea fans ahead of Wednesday night’s match?
Comments from Chelsea fans via their message boards The Shed End and CFC Net:
‘Prepare for a revenge match.’
‘All change for this one, as this has to be our lowest priority. Don’t get me wrong, winning it would be brilliant, but I wouldn’t take risks before another big game in the league next weekend.’
‘We have the depth to be able to fight on all fronts, so I think we’ll be competitive regardless.
I see this ending a draw, and going to penalty lottery.
Newcastle will take it more seriously than us in terms of the squad they put out.’
‘Had we drawn on sunday i would have been more confident of a win with this game. But i think Newcastle will be quite up for this, tight margins but i am mentally prepared for this chance of a trophy to fall by the wayside. Lets see.’
‘Both teams will rotate, we have a cup team that have played together a few times and are scoring goals + growing in confidence, I give us the edge.’
‘Sancho I guess is nailed on to start as can’t play Sunday.’
‘I’m in the away end for this game. My record when seeing Newcastle vs Chelsea in the stadium is 4 defeats and a draw.
I really hope I finally get to see a win.
And no, I refuse to believe I’m the curse. We’ve also lost the times I haven’t been in the stadium either! We just seem to go to pieces at St James’ Park, and I’d really like to see us turn this around.’
‘You’re right, you can’t take the blame, our record there is toilet. Almost as bad as theirs at SB.’
‘Checked the weather. Warm for the time of year (12C) and dry.’
‘I’ ve been there once, in 1999 or 2000. Impressive stadium, almost right in the city center. I really liked it. Nice people, but I was neutral – can’t remember who they played against. I was with a small group and we were in a lounge/VIP area and we also attended a meet and greet with the players after the game. I had a short talk with Gary Speed. Really nice chap. RIP.’
‘Still remains one of the saddest stories in PL history his passing. Good player and seemed to be a much-loved guy. Lots of people speak really highly of him. Very sad even all these years later.’
‘No doubt will make some changes given the Utd game on the weekend, Newcastle however may feel they need a win of any description and I expect to see a strong Newcastle starting line up….we should have enough for a close victory but it could go one way or the other.’
‘Probably go with a similar team as against Panathinaikos. Maybe Veiga holding mid next to Enzo and then start Gusto at RB.’
‘Hoping that the club and Acheampong sort a deal out so he can play in this. This is the time when the club can show the lad that there will always be chances in a rotational squad challenging on all fronts.’
‘Not sure playing him against a team that has both Hall and Livramento as starters is a great example of the first-team pathway for young full-backs at Chelsea!’
‘Not going to lie I think our B team will fair better this time.’
‘We are currently on a positive trajectory and it would be important not to kill the momentum by getting knocked out in October from one of the competitions we are involved in.
St. James’ Park is a very difficult ground and if they field their starting team, I am afraid our “Conference League, B team” will be in all kinds of problems. And to be fair Newcastle have no reason not to field their strongest team as they have no European football and need a confidence booster at the moment.
Difficult match this one, hopefully we go through!’
‘Any team we field will find it difficult at St.James, we rarely have an “easy” trip there.’
‘Let’s go win this! The “B” team is playing with a point to prove and also in good form.’
‘As its a cup game that we really want to win and we’ve seen already Newcastle arent walk overs. I’d be more willing to play the A team tbh, or at least most of the A team.’
‘Depends on how seriously Newcastle takes this considering they have Arsenal at the weekend.’
‘I don’t think our second string can deal with Newcastles physicality, however without James and Lavia the first team would likely also struggle.
Newcastle have to go full strength in this game. They have no European football, and could do with a trophy.’
