Chelsea “initiated contact” over impressive midfielder but one big thing has changed

With the January window behind us and the summer still far away it’s been a quiet time for Chelsea transfer rumours, with most news dominated by talk of our goalkeeping situation.

However there’s always room for something new, and in this case it’s come with a brand new name thrown into the mix. Links to Tijjani Reijnders came from nowhere a few days ago, and are now developing quickly. TeamTalk today have an exclusive with plenty of detail about how this deal might go down.

They say that the Blues have “initiated contact” with AC Milan over the midfielder as they look to add more central midfield help for Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez. Mathis Amougou is expected to be loaned out next season and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall could leave, meaning even the arrival of Andrey Santos from his spell at Strasbourg might not be enough for a complete midfield.

Midfielder move looking less likely than ever after contract development

As usual, we have our caveats when it comes to these rumours. We always have to bear in mind Chelsea’s strict model when it comes to signing players under this new ownership and work out if those being linked fit the bill.

To start with, Reijnders is 26, so much older than what we’re aiming for. He also signed a new contract just this week which means he’s no longer temptingly cheap in terms of a transfer fee, and no longer on a low wage.

So we’d say this deal looks only a fraction as likely as it did just a few days ago when the Dutch internationals contract situation made it far more likely that those in charge at Stamford Bridge would bend their rules to get an experienced and versatile player in for cheap.
