Chelsea needed to win this game as much as Newcastle did, but a first half sending off by Nicolas Jackson did not help their cause. Enzo Maresca has admitted that Jackson now needs to learn from this situation moving forward.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher now believes that Chelsea have a big problem after this defeat with just two games remaining of the season and the reality being that The Blues need two wins to guarantee a place in the Champions League for next season.

Maresca’s job is safe

As has now been heavily reported around the media world, Chelsea will not sack Enzo Maresca regardless of whether The Blues get Champions League football for next season or not.

This news will have mixed reviews from the fan base, many of whom will hate it, others will love it.

Maresca wants to be backed

As he is now apparently staying regardless, the Italian has put his wishes across to the club’s board.

Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips writes on his Substack site today:

‘This will come as no surprise because he has even said it publicly, but SPTC sources are hearing again that Maresca has communicated to the board that he wants more experience added to his squad in general, and more experience in key areas such as striker and centre back.

‘We’ve heard that he has gotten a little frustrated this season that his views were not actioned earlier in the year, but the Italian has made his feelings clear again recently.

‘As we have reported today, Chelsea are now looking to action these things in the summer transfer window, especially with the addition of some quality experience.’
