One Chelsea legend has been speaking out this week about Blues head coach Enzo Maresca and admits to being skeptical about one thing initially.
I think many of the fans were a bit skeptical as well when Maresca was announced, but this Blues legend actually isn’t even speaking about his skeptisim over Maresca, he is speaking about the squad.
When Gianfranco Zola speaks, it’s often very wise to listen. He was such a good player and so clever when he played the game. Whilst he might not have had too much success as a coach since retiring, he certainly does often know what he is talking about.
And in this instance, he is talking about the large squad size of Chelsea and how he feared it being too big and having too much quality at the start of this season.
However, Zola has admitted he sees it working now.
Maresca has a big and talented squad
In words cited on X, Zola said:
“What I like about Maresca, I know he has a huge squad and I was one of those ones that was a little bit skeptical about that, because, having a big squad, the advantage is that you have many choices.
“Now, when you have many choices, sometimes you don’t find your own identity, because you don’t recognize who is in the main squad, who is the regular. And in a team, you need to have these things.
“But it seems to me that Maresca is, despite all of that, he has found a common ground for everyone. I see more and more a group of players that are playing consistently, and this is producing good results.
“Obviously, this is just one end of it. On the other hand, I like what he is doing at Chelsea. There is a good structure. He’s got the team playing well from the back, and there is a good organization on the pitch and it’s producing good results.”
