Chelsea are considering a move for Wolves right-back Nelson Semedo, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The Blues are looking for cover in the full-back area for Reece James and Phillips reckons the star, who joined from Barcelona for £37m two years ago, could emerge as an option in the future.

What’s the latest news involving Semedo?

Chelsea managed to bolster their left-sided department with the addition of Marc Cucurella, who was part of a summer spending spree at Stamford Bridge.

But the Londoners weren’t able to bring in a right-back to provide competition and cover for James, who’s since suffered a hamstring injury and is currently on the sidelines.

As a result, Graham Potter has been forced to play the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and even Christian Pulisic out there with James out injured.

Therefore, Phillips reckons that Semedo is a player of interest to Chelsea, with the club considering him as a potential addition in the future.

What did Phillips say about Semedo?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Chelsea also like Nelson Semedo from Wolves and are considering him as an option to come in to give competition for Reece James.”

How has Semedo performed this season?

Despite Phillips claiming that Chelsea are interested, it’s been a testing campaign for the Portugal international, who’s slipped down the pecking order at Wolves.

That’s because Semedo has started just four times in the Premier League since August and has only been picked from the off on six occasions all season.

To make matters worse, Wolves are winless in the six games Semedo has started, with three defeats and draws with Newcastle, Bournemouth and Brentford.

He’s also registered just a single goal contribution in 11 appearances this season, while he’s only chipped in with two goals and four assists in more than 70 games throughout his Wolves career, which would surely need to improve if he makes the step up to a top six club.

Regardless, with Chelsea in desperate need of some depth on the right-side of their defence, they could do worse than bringing Semedo, described as a ‘fantastic athlete‘ by Tim Sherwood to the club.
