Romeo Lavia believes Chelsea are exactly where they want to be with the football they are playing despite their defeat against Manchester City.

The Blues started their campaign with a 2-0 defeat against City thanks to goals from Erling Haaland and former midfielder Mateo Kovacic.

Despite some positives Enzo Maresca will be even more aware of how much work he’s got to do, particularly defensively, with the Blues once again making a number of defensive errors.

Lavia on performance against City

It was a big moment for Lavia who started his first competitive game for the Blues after missing virtually the entire last campaign through injury.

The Belgian, who was deployed alongside Moises Caicedo with Enzo Fernandez in a more advanced role put in an impressive performance and showed exactly what he can bring to the team.

It’s been a long road for Lavia to get to this point and the Blues will be hoping he can stay fit for the majority of the campaign and he’s likely to play a key role under Enzo Maresca.

Lavia impressed for Chelsea in their defeat against City.

Speaking after the game the 20-year-old felt that despite the result the way the Blues are playing is where they want to be.

“I think there are a lot of positives to take from this game, we had a lot of chances,” Lavia told Chelsea’s website.

“We felt like we had the chance to get on top but it didn’t happen. They were clinical, but we had the chance to come back at times. When you play against good teams you know that these types of things can happen.

“It’s about learning from it. It’s only the first game of the season. There are 38 games in the season and as you can see something is growing, you can definitely see that on the pitch.

“Obviously, the result didn’t go our way today on the pitch, but I think the way we are playing and the way we are now is exactly where we want to be. We are taking the good things and focusing on the next game.”

Next up for Lavia and his team mates is a game against Servette in the Europa Conference League on Thursday before a trip to Wolves on Sunday.
