Chelsea’s €33m deal in question after Champions League injury almost brings disaster

It had all started so well for Renato Veiga in Turin.
The defender had pushed hard for a move away from Chelsea in January as he wanted to play more regularly at centre back. At Juventus he was not only playing where he wanted, he was also playing in the first team and getting rave reviews for it.
“Tough to beat physically and composed on the ball” was the review of his latest league performance, and he really looked to be helping the Old Lady find their feet in the Serie A title race.
His strong start to life in Italy has already meant a lot of speculation about his future – some sources said that Chelsea were putting a €33m price tag on him for a permanent move. That may now all go up in smoke, however.

But last night things suddenly turned bad for Veiga, after such a promising start. Veiga went down injured in the 12th minute of the Champions League playoff second leg as his team looked to defend a 2-1 win from the first leg.
His absence disrupted the defence heavily, and Juve ended up losing 3-1, enough to knock them out in embarrassing fashion.
There is still no definitive word about the severity of Veiga’s injury, which at first looked like it could be an ACL tear as he lay stricken. However he was able to walk off the pitch, so we can just pray it’s less severe than it looked.

As you can see in the Tweet embedded above, some sources are hopeful it’s “less serious than expected” and could just be a calf strain. We should get more information later today.
