Former Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini feels Ollie Watkins’ late winner against the Netherlands was ‘avoidable’ and reveals the only thing Stefan de Vrij should not have done in that situation.

Ex-Italy and Juventus centre-back Chiellini believes Inter defender De Vrij should have done more to avoid a late Watkins goal in the EURO 2024 semifinal, which sent the Three Lions to the Final against Spain.

“Small details make the difference,” Chiellini told Sky Sport Italia.

“Watkins’ move was correct, but he was directed towards the corner flag. He wasn’t dangerous. The only thing that a defender must not do [in that situation] is try to get the ball. Covering the space towards the far post allows the goalkeeper to make an easy save. You don’t need to intercept the ball because if it goes between your legs…

“It was an avoidable goal, and I am sorry because Stefan is an excellent defender, and he played so well in this tournament. However, the difference between winning and losing, lifting and not lifting a trophy, is often down to these small details.”

Today, Chiellini lifted the Euro trophy three years ago after Italy’s win on penalties against England at Wembley Stadium.

The 39-year-old retired this past January after one and a half years at LAFC. He is still part of the American club and spoke to Sky Sport Italia last night from his home in Los Angeles.

The former Italy international made 117 appearances with the Azzurri, scoring eight goals. He also won nine Serie A titles with Juventus.
