Rangers secured a massive Old Firm derby win after beating Celtic 3-2 away from Ibrox on Sunday afternoon.
It was Barry Ferguson’s first game against Celtic, and he now has a 100% record as a manager. He becomes the first Rangers manager to win his first match at Celtic Park since Walter Smith in 1991.
What a week this has been for the Gers! First, they beat Fenerbahce to secure passage to the last eight of the Europa League, and now they have earned a derby win.
Hamza Igamane scored the winner for Rangers with a thunderous strike from 20 yards out, and Chris Sutton was stunned by the effort.
The Celtic legend described it as a “phenomenal” strike.
Rangers played with energy and ferocity, something that was missing under the previous managers. They took an early lead through Nicolas Raskin and doubled it through Mohamed Diomande in the 37th minute.
After the break, Celtic responded, as they have done the whole season, and levelled the tie through Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate.
Cyriel Dessers missed a great opportunity to put Rangers ahead, but Igamane didn’t. He showed his nerve and class with a thunder strike from a distance, leaving the Celtic goalie no chance of saving that.
Celtic still leads the Scottish Premiership table by 13 points, but this win means a lot more to Rangers fans. The Gers have restored some pride, and they can look forward to ending the season on a high, which will give them immense confidence.
Ferguson will be really proud of his players. They gave everything on the pitch, and that’s what you can ask for in a derby game. He not only brought the best out of the players who started, but also from those who came off the bench.
