Celtic suffered their first league defeat at Celtic Park last week, losing 3-2 against Rangers. Chris Sutton feels the Bhoys need to do a lot of work in the summer window.
The Hoops are on course to win the domestic treble under Brendan Rodgers, and that will be an incredible achievement.
Celtic bolstered their squad last summer, and as a result, they did well in the Champions League this season. Sutton feels that the Hoops must continue to improve their squad depth.
Celtic were missing several key players against Rangers on Sunday, but it was not an injury crisis. Rodgers still fielded a strong line-up, but they were far from their usual best.
Sutton pointed out that Celtics took a calculated gamble when they sold Kyogo Furuhashi in the January window. They knew the gap was too big for Rangers to close them down. But that is something they cannot afford to do next season.
He wrote for the Daily Record: “Too many players had real off days and the failure to sign another striker to replace Kyogo in January also hit home.
“It’s difficult for a team to have an edge when they’re 16 points clear and there’s not much jeopardy going in. I get that.
“But it also comes from the top. Letting Kyogo go mid-season with no replacement sends out a message that the board thinks the league is done as well.
“No one can tell me that would have been allowed to happen if the gap was only a couple of points. It’s complacency – and that’s something Celtic cannot afford ahead of next season.”
Under Rodgers, Celtic were streets ahead in the league, and their consistency has been remarkable. They made improvements in the Champions League, and it should continue.
Celtic have conceded three goals in each of the last three derbies and that is a big worrying sign. They must look to bolster their defence while signing a top-quality striker should be a priority next summer.
Rangers have figured out a way to beat Celtic, and the Bhoys need more strength and depth in their squad to counter the problem.
