Manchester United are reportedly in the fray for rising RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukebo, but they face steep competition for his services.

The 22-year-old rose through the ranks of Olympique Lyonnais before being recruited by the Bundesliga boys in the summer of 2023 for €25 million. Following an impressive first campaign on German soil, the Frenchman was rewarded with a new and improved contract last October.

His new deal is valid until the summer of 2029 and it includes a release clause worth €90 million. Nevertheless, Transfermarkt estimates his market value at around €50 million.

Lukebo has been linked with the Red Devils for a while now, as he was already on the shortlist of the club’s former manager Erik ten Hag. One of the Dutchman’s collaborators had reportedly brought forward Lukebo’s name while labelling him as a ‘generational’ talent.

According to German journalist Christian Falk, Man Utd are indeed interested in the up-and-coming French centre-back. In his latest column for The Daily Briefing, the transfer market insider names the Premier League giants as one of several European superpowers who are keen to land the player in the summer.

The source names Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid as the defender’s other suitors, while revealing that he and his entourage have set their sights on a transfer to Santiago Bernabeu.

But despite the player’s preference, his dream move might not materialise, which would open the door for United to launch an onslaught and secure the player’s services.

However, it must be said that the Reds’ current state renders them a less enticing destination compared to other clubs, especially those who have been consistently reaching the final stages of the Champions League and competing for the biggest honours.
