Chris Davies have been urged to give Lyndon Dykes more game time.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Birmingham City have taken League One by storm this season with their summer spending fully justified as we head towards the conclusion of the campaign.
Under the stewardship of their new owners, Knighthead Capital Management, the Blues have embraced the third tier as a fresh start. Chris Davies was appointed as head coach, while high-profile signings such as Jay Stansfield and Christoph Klarer arrived for significant fees to take Birmingham towards the title.
As a result, optimism has returned to St Andrew’s, and the club are looking upwards for the first time in a long while.
With ten games remaining for the Blues, they hold a nine-point advantage over their nearest rivals and Championship football now looks like a guarantee.
The next step will be making progress in the Championship, and you’d fancy Birmingham to mount a serious push in the tier above next year.
With Birmingham on the brink of promotion, Football League World asked their resident Bluenose, Mike Gibbs, to share an unpopular opinion on the season so far.
One thought stood out for Gibbs - he believes summer signing Lyndon Dykes deserves more game time once he returns to action.
"I am a big fan of Lyndon Dykes, and I think he really gives us something different," Gibbs told FLW.
"When fit, he should start most games.
"I know a lot of fans didn't warm to him at the start, but before his injury, maybe people were beginning to.
"For me, I think he is extremely useful and completely different from anything else we’ve got.
"My unpopular opinion is that I would have Lyndon Dykes in my starting XI most weeks."
As Gibbs mentioned, Dykes brings a completely different dynamic to Birmingham's team. Their other options up front are Alfie May and Jay Stansfield, and while both are superb finishers, they prefer to let the ball at their feet do the talking.
The former Queens Park Rangers attacker offers a contrasting style and provides Davies with a direct approach should he wish to change tactics.
Next season in the Championship, Dykes could prove invaluable, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his time at Loftus Road. While he has never been a prolific goalscorer, he can still contribute, and players like May and Stansfield will benefit from his support.
Players of this ilk will be crucial in the second tier, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the 29-year-old play a more prominent role in the division above.
