Former Leicester City and Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri has come out of retirement to manage Italian side AS Roma until the end of the season.
Ranieri returns to his hometown club six months after announcing his retirement following a period at fellow Italian outfit Cagliari where he guided them to survival in Serie A.
At the end of the season the 73-year-old will “transition into a senior executive role”, the club said.
His appointment as Roma’s third coach of the season comes after the sacking of Ivan Juric on Sunday. The Croatian was in charge for only 12 matches following the departure of Danielle De Rossi four games into the season.
De Rossi, a former Roma player and legend of the club, was only in charge for eight months himself after the club decided to part ways with Jose Mourinho in January. Ranieri has managed Roma twice before, as well as a temporary spell in charge in 2019.
The Italian has managed 18 clubs in a managerial career spanning 37 years, which included four Premier League sides, Chelsea, Watford, Fulham and Leicester as well as the Greece national team. Ranieri’s biggest achievement was guiding Leicester to an improbable 5000/1 odds Premier League title win.
Former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini was linked with the role following his departure as manager of the Saudi Arabian national team, but Ranieri has been given the vote of confidence to take charge.
Roma spent more than £80m in the summer transfer window, but their poor start to the Serie A campaign sees them 12th in the table with just 13 points, half the total of league leaders Napoli. They are also down in 20th in the Europa League league table after picking up just five points from four matches.
