Clement admits he’d love a draw for Rangers v Lyon

We have to admit Rangers manager Philippe Clement’s admission that a draw would be a great result for Rangers isn’t the kind of mentality we want to hear from our manager.

Clement, who tried to justify the loss to Celtic via stats then praising the number of goals v Ross County for ‘context’, has a bad habit of saying very ‘unRangersy’ things and this is just another example.

If we were travelling to Lyon’s home patch then maybe, MAYBE Clement could get away with saying this, but suggesting Rangers would be happy with a home draw and that would be a great result just isn’t Rangers manager material.

While some fans will argue he’s playing mind games, we’re not sure that’s the case at all. He’s many times made admissions after matches which were of the same mentality, of buying time, accepting second best, of justifying not winning, or ‘failure’ as most Rangers fans should put it.

No, we think Clement’s statement is just poor (again):

“Winning against Lyon would be a huge thing. Even a draw would be a very, very good result. We’ll go for the three points, but for that we need a few players to be above their level and have an amazing evening. We would also need the fans to be our 12th player and to bring us incredible energy.”

He’s already putting his squad down, and while some might argue ‘he’s just being realistic’, saying this stuff is simply not what Rangers managers say.

He’s also been guilty of exalting our opponents (Lyon) as basically outstanding (they’re a good side, yes, but nowhere near the level of Benfica) and that they’re just ‘better’ than us.

It’s a very handwringing and capitulating statement, in truth.

Even sadder, there will be a lot of Rangers fans defending his comments, Happy Clapping their way through the match and just yelling WATP and ‘support the team and manager ffs’ and let that be the end of it.

We want to see a Rangers with high expectation, not one that sees a draw with inconsistent Lyon as a bonus.

Just us?
