Manchester United have released an official statement revealing Amad is set to be ruled out for a “number of weeks” with an ankle injury, offering hope the 22-year-old winger may return before the end of the season.

The devastating news Amad had picked up a serious injury in training emerged yesterday after Ruben Amorim made reference to “problems” in his squad during a pre-match press-conference for today’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

Midfielders Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte, and Toby Collyer have missed the trip to North London as the Red Devils’ midfield unit faces something of a crisis.

Further injuries in the squad forced Amorim to “call up five academy players” to the first-team squad to face Spurs, including Chido Obi, Sékou Koné, Harry Amass, Jack Moorhouse and Elyh Harrison.

This drastic step to rely on youngsters while your first-choice midfield trio are ruled out would have been sufficient to constitute “problems”.

However, it was revealed after the press-conference that Amad had sustained an ankle injury which initial reports suggested could rule him out for the remainder of the season.

A report relayed by The Peoples Person this morning states the 22-year-old will “undergo surgery” next week, further supporting this prospective timeline. But the club’s official statement on Amad contends his injury is “expected to keep him out for a number of weeks.”

Tweet: “We can confirm that Amad has sustained an ankle injury in training that is expected to keep him out for a number of weeks. Setbacks are set-ups for comebacks, @AmadDiallo_19 — we know you’ve got this.”

This offers a tantalising glimmer of optimism the injury is not as severe as reports have contended and keeps open the possibility the Ivorian international may return before the end of the season.

United’s distant hopes to salvage a successful season lie in the cups as their domestic form has been beyond dismal. The club should be expecting to progress far into the Europa League and FA Cup, given their favourable draws and the remaining teams in both respective competitions.

The prospect of Amad returning in the final weeks of the campaign, when the semi-final and finals of both cups will be taking place, is one United fans will be keen to cling to, given how important the 22-year-old has become for the Red Devils this season.

The wording of the statement – a “number of weeks”, rather than a number of months – supports this view.

However, United will be acutely aware of what a demoralising blow losing the team’s player of the year is for an already disillusioned fanbase, particularly given Lisandro Martinez was ruled out for the rest of the campaign with his own serious injury after surgery this week.

The selective wording of a “number of weeks” could realistically equate to 15 weeks – the exact timeframe until the end of the season. It’s just to say this, rather than a “number of months”, offers a ray of light in an otherwise dark season for United fans.
