The England international shone during his first season with the Blues, scoring 27 goals while registering 15 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions.

Palmer, who won both the club’s Men’s Player of the Season and Men’s Players’ Player of the Year awards, initially signed a seven-year deal following a £42.5m move from Manchester City last summer.

Such brilliant form has seen Palmer nominated for the 2023/24 PFA Player’s Player of the Year award, alongside Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard and City stars Erling Haaland, Rodri and Phil Foden.

Standard Sport understands Chelsea chiefs had devised a plan to keep the 22-year-old at Stamford Bridge for the bulk of his career by incrementally increasing his wages.

The forward’s initial wage is believed to have been set at around £80k-per-week, far lower than many of the top earners in SW6. Still, the club’s owners are determined to add a level of moderation to their wage structure, with staged rises said to be crucial to the plan.

Palmer returned from a post-Euro 2024 break for the 1-1 draw with Inter Milan in Enzo Maresca’s first home game in charge and is in contention to play against City as Chelsea begin their Premier League campaign on Sunday.

‘I’m delighted to sign this new deal,’ said Palmer. ‘I achieved a lot in my first season here and hopefully I can continue to experience great things at this club, both on a personal level and in terms of bringing success and trophies to Chelsea.
