Veracruz finally broke its historic 41-game winless streak this past Tuesday, October 29, with a 1-0 win against Puebla at home. Colin Kazim-Richards was the hero of the night as he scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 49th minute of the match.
The win was of incredible significance to Veracruz players and fans as the team could finally celebrate a victory after over a year.
Kazim-Richards talked about the victory after the match and said, “It’s nice to end this s-h-i-t. For me personally to have this on my career is a shame and looking at people like Carlos Salcido who has been to three World Cups. He’s won like me many competitions around the world like me and a 41-game winless streak is crazy. But now it’s done, you’re only as good as your last game they say right, so we can go into Monterrey with some good feeling.”
The English striker also talked about how he does not consider himself the “hero” and how “it’s not a good history to be a part of.” Kazim-Richards said, “41 games without winning, I’m not a hero, it’s a team game. If I don’t get the ball, I couldn’t score, so it’s a team effort you understand.”
The former Galatasaray forward did mention that he is currently “happy” despite the tough situation and how even his kids are adapting to life in Mexico. However, his time at Veracruz seems to be coming to an end as Kazim-Richards revealed that his contract is up at the end of the season and said, “I’m definitely leaving.”
When asked if he wanted to stay in Mexico Kazim said, “Yeah, the Mexican league is very competitive, it’s a nice league, it has many nice people. Okay the situation has been very bad, but I don’t want to paint all Mexicans with the same brush. Many beautiful, amazing people in Mexico. I would love to stay here. My kids speak Spanish now you understand. It would be nice, but I have to be realistic and I have to look at all the options.”
Despite, it not being the best history, Colin Kazim-Richards has earned a place in Mexican soccer history with his goal on Tuesday night. The Englishman will be forever remembered by Veracruz fans as the player that was finally able to give them joy after over a year.
