We take a look at the difference in squad value between the two Welsh clubs in the Championship

It's not been the greatest of starts to the 2024/25 Championship season for the two Welsh clubs in the division, and between them, they have just one win from eight games.

That came from Swansea City when they beat Preston North End 3-0 on the second weekend of the season, and while they find themselves languishing in mid-table, their bitter rivals Cardiff City are rock bottom of the league.

Cardiff have picked up just one point and scored one goal so far this season, ironically coming against Swansea in the recent South Wales Derby, and that afternoon showed there is absolutely no love lost between the two clubs.

The Bluebirds had their boss Erol Bulut sent off while there were a series of late scuffles as both sides looked to get one over each other.

Their next meeting isn't until January, but using Transfermarkt, we've taken a look at the market value of the two squads, to see how much each squad is worth, and to see who should be performing better this season.

Swansea City's squad market value

As per Transfermarkt, Swansea City's squad market value is €41.05m, which equates to just over £34.6million.

This puts them 17th in the Championship, showing that Luke Williams has one of the smaller squad values to work in the division, with the likes of QPR, Plymouth, Sheffield Wednesday, Millwall, Derby, Oxford United and Portsmouth the only sides below them.

The Jack Army may be surprised to read that Transfermarkt has Ben Cabango as the player with the highest market value in their squad, with the centre-back having a value of €9million, which equates to roughly £7.6million.

He's followed by Matt Grimes (€7m) and Josh Tymon (€3.2m) as the Swansea players with the highest market value.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Nathan Broome is the Swansea player with the lowest market value, with his value at just €100k, while surprisingly, Kyle Naughton is the player with the second-lowest market value, with his being €150k.

Cardiff City's squad has a higher market value than their Welsh rivals, with a Transfermarkt value of €48.80m, which equates to just under £41.2million.

This puts them 12th in the Championship, dead in the middle, but a lot closer to 24th place Portsmouth, whose squad has a market value of €17.50m, than first place Burnley, whose squad value is a whopping €196.10m.

This perhaps shows that the Bluebirds should be performing a lot better than they have been so far this season, and the pressure will be on Bulut to get the best out of these players in the coming weeks.

The Cardiff player with the highest market value is new signing Jesper Daland, with a value of €4.5million, which is half of Swansea's Cabango, but the Bluebirds have more players with similar values, compared to Swansea who have Cabango and Grimes way out in front.

Meanwhile, the Cardiff City first-team player with the lowest market value is young goalkeeper Matt Turner, who has a value of just €50k, while he's followed by left-back Joel Bagan, who has a market value of €350,000.
