FLW compares the market value of the two East Anglian rivals

Norwich City and Ipswich Town form one of English football's most historic rivalries, although the two East Anglian outfits won't be doing battle against one another this season.

Despite failing to secure the bragging rights in a contest between the two sides since April 19th 2009 in a 3-2 success at Portman Road, the Tractor Boys still had the last laugh as far as the most recent Championship campaign was concerned, as they achieved back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League, ending a 22-year exile from the top flight in the process.

Meanwhile, Norwich were thumped by Leeds United in the play-off semi-finals and oversaw a change in the dugout as Johannes Hoff Thorup was swiftly appointed after David Wagner's departure in May, consigning the Canaries to a third successive season in the second tier after their 2022 relegation.

Both sides have seen plenty of change across the summer in terms of transfer activity to bolster the chances of achieving their respective aims this season, which for Norwich would be a return to the top flight, whilst their bitter rivals will be hoping to have consolidated their position in the Premier League come May.

With that in mind, Football League World has compared the market value of the two squads for the current campaign.

At present, Transfermarkt estimates that the combined market value of Norwich's squad is a figure of €70.88m, which equates to a total of £59.86m.

These estimations also state that the Canaries' most valuable asset, besides Manchester City loanee Callum Doyle, is USMNT striker Josh Sargent, who holds a valuation of €14m (£11.82m), although previous reports from The Athletic state that the Carrow Road outfit value the 24-year-old in excess of £20m.

Sargent is the only permanent asset at Carrow Road whose market value is in eight-figure territory, with Amankwah Forson and Marcelino Nunez holding figures of approximately €5m (£4.22m).

Compared to their divisional counterparts, Norwich's overall market value is said to be the eighth-highest in the second tier, although it comes €125.22m behind the leaders in this particular field, with such an 'accolade' falling in the way of Burnley.

Therefore, it's no shock that the market value of Norwich's current side falls drastically short of the estimated figures given to their East Anglian rivals too.

Ipswich Town's market value is significantly higher than Norwich City's

In years gone by, it would have easily been Norwich City who held the greater market valuation, especially when featuring as a Premier League side in 2019/20 and 2021/22, whilst their bitter rivals were still stuck in the depths of League One prior to Kieran McKenna's arrival.

Unsurprisingly, given Ipswich's current status, the shoe is now well and truly on the other foot as Town have invested significantly across the summer to strengthen their squad with numerous additions that bring a wealth of quality and experience to a side largely formed whilst still a third tier club, before achieving successive promotions.

Ipswich's current market value is an estimated total of €161.1m, which works out at a figure of £136.02m, giving them a £76.16m edge on their East Anglian rivals when it comes to the combined valuation of squads.

However, given the wealth that is currently possessed by a large majority of clubs in the Premier League, Ipswich have the least valuable squad in the top flight, making up the bottom three behind fellow newcomers, Southampton and Leicester City.

The man who is currently the Blues' highest-valued performer - besides Manchester City loanee Kalvin Phillips - is new recruit Jack Clarke, who has recently signed from Sunderland for a reported initial fee of £15m, plus £5m in potential add-ons, with the winger who netted 25 Championship goals at the Stadium of Light having an estimated market value of €15m (£12.6m).

The chances of Ipswich Town and Norwich City renewing rivalry next season

It's no real surprise that Town hold the stronger market valuation, and even if they were to be relegated and lose a number of star names, there could be significant reinvestment down the line, which currently cannot be said for Norwich aside from Sargent.

Of course, many have tipped the Tractor Boys for an instant return to the Championship, but they have competed reasonably well against Liverpool, Manchester City, and Fulham, and return to action against fellow high-flyers Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Norwich picked up their first victory under Hoff Thorup at Coventry City prior to the international break and will be hoping to click into gear after an indifferent start under the Dane, as they travel to Swansea City.

Given outsiders' pre-season predictions, many fancy there to be a renewal of the East Anglian Derby in the Championship next term, although given the ambitions of both clubs, insiders and supporters will be hoping for a first top-flight clash since 1995 between the two clubs.
