The Lega Serie A could schedule a potential title playoff match between Inter Milan and Napoli for the 27th of May.
This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They highlight the scheduling chaos in the Italian top flight.
The Lega Serie A have given themselves something of a logistical headache.
A couple of seasons ago, the league changed the rules for the Serie A title.
In the event that two or more teams finish level on points at the top of the league table, the tie-breaker would not be the head-to-head record of the teams, or goal difference.
Rather, in that scenario it would go down to a one-off match between the two teams. Essentially a playoff for the Scudetto.
And with just a single point separating Napoli and Inter Milan at the top as things stand with two matches to go, there is certainly a real possibility of that happening.
If the Partenopei are to beat Parma this Sunday, and the Nerazzurri to lose to Lazio, then the league leaders will mathematically clinch the title.
Otherwise, the title race will undoubtedly go down to the final day of the season.

This situation leaves the Lega Serie A scratching their heads as to where they could fit in a potential title playoff in the event that it comes to that.
One possibility would be to bump Inter and Napoli’s final league matches forward.
The two title rivals will undoubtedly play their final matches – against Como and Cagliari respectively – at the same time.
Inter and Napoli could play their final league matches concurrently next Thursday, the 22nd.
Therefore, if the two teams were to finish level on points, they could then play on Sunday the 25th.
That would be the most convenient option by far for Inter. The Nerazzurri have the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain to think about.
Therefore, Inter will hardly want to have a Serie A title playoff against Napoli just a few days before they face PSG.
On the other hand, however, the Lega Serie A could schedule Inter and Napoli’s final league matches for Saturday the 24th, a day before the rest of the league matches on Sunday.
Then, the playoff, were it to happen, would be on the 27th, a Tuesday.
However, Inter would strongly resist this idea. After all, that would only give them a few days between that match and the Champions League final.
