Manchester City welcome Newcastle United to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon hoping to capitalise on Chelsea’s defeat on Friday night.

City can leapfrog the west London club into fourth position with a win over Eddie Howe’s men this weekend after Enzo Maresca and his players succumbed to a drubbing at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion on the south coast.

However, the Premier League champions return to on-field competitive action off the back of a hugely disappointing 2-3 defeat to Real Madrid in the first-leg of a UEFA Champions League last-16 play-off tie at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.

That followed a 5-1 loss to Arsenal in the last Premier League outing and a 1-2 comeback win over Leyton Orient last time out in domestic action as the League One side were beaten in the fourth round of the FA Cup by City last weekend.

The meeting with Newcastle separates the first-leg meeting with Carlo Ancelotti’s side and the second-leg which awaits at the Santiago Bernabeu in the Spanish capital on Wednesday night, with City to make the journey 24 hours prior to kick-off.

Newcastle will be buoyant after their cup successes in recent weeks having reached the Carabao Cup final by defeating Arsenal 4-0 on aggregate where they will now face Liverpool, while Birmingham City were beaten at St Andrew’s by the Magpies.

Manchester City are without Manuel Akanji this weekend after the Swiss international sustained an abductor injury in midweek which requires surgery and sidelines him from action for up to 10 weeks.

Oscar Bobb and Rodri are also expected to remain out as they continue their recovery from longer-term issues, while there have been question marks over Nico Gonzalez and Jack Grealish’s availability throughout the week.

Ahead of kick-off at the Etihad Stadium, here is how both Pep Guardiola and Eddie Howe have lined up their respective Manchester City and Newcastle United sides in Premier League action!
