Conte Rectifies His Statements About Kvaratskhelia

Antonio Conte changed his tune after seemingly showing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia the door in the presser before the Hellas Verona game, backtracking some of his remarks after beating the Scaligeri on Sunday (via Fanpage).

“I’ve spoken about being disappointed, but it wasn’t toward the player or the club, but rather in myself because I didn’t manage to pull my weight to change this situation in the last six months. He or the team hasn’t let me down. I don’t pin the blame on anybody else but rather take responsibility. I thought I would be more influential, instead, we’re back to square one.”

Conte had reportedly blocked the departure of Kvaratskhelia in the summer, posing his permanence as one of the conditions to take over the Napoli job. However, the parties haven’t been able to agree to a renewal afterward. The Georgian ace is still very keen on joining PSG.

“A coach of a certain level helps the club make decisions and provides advice about signings. My disappointment comes with the realization that I haven’t been impactful. I don’t want to take anything away from him, who’s a great guy. Then, each has to decide his destiny, and the side has to make decisions. Maybe I was a little presumptuous in believing I could have affected him more.” “It’s a pity because we’re talking about a strong and important footballer. But we also have to come to grips with reality. That being said, Kvaratskhelia is a Napoli player. We shouldn’t forget it because some steps need to happen if somebody wants to acquire him. Nothing should be taken for granted. We’ll see.”
