Argentina are champions of the Americas once again after defending their Copa America title with an extra-time win over Colombia in the final.

Following the conclusion of the tournament we’ve selected our best XI from the summer’s action. Here is our Team of the Tournament for the 2024 Copa America.

Goalkeeper: Emiliano Martinez – Argentina

Emiliano Martinez continues to deliver for Argentina in big tournaments and underlined his credentials as one of the best number ones in the game at the Copa America.

Martinez conceded just one goal all tournament and came alive in the quarter-final as Argentine were taken to penalties by Ecuador. Two stops spared the blushes of Lionel Messi and kept Argentina on course to defend their crown.

Right-back: Daniel Munoz – Colombia

Daniel Munoz has been one of the most underrated pieces of Premier League business across the past 12 months.

The right-back arrived from Genk in January and cemented his place in the Crystal Palace team before impressing for Colombia at this summer’s Copa America. He scored twice in the group stage, including a crucial equaliser against Brazil to ensure top spot. A red card in the semi-final blighted his campaign but he was crucial to Colombia’s passage to the final.

Centre-back: Cristian Romero – Argentina

A man-of-the-match final performance capped a campaign to remember for Romero, who has been a rock-like figure in Argentina’s success under Lionel Scaloni. He anticipates danger, wins tackles, makes blocks, and strides forward with confidence, all the hallmarks of an elite modern centre-back.

In Romero’s 35 caps for the national team, Argentina have won four trophies and recorded 29 clean sheets. A certain Lionel Messi believes he is the best in the world right now.

Centre-back: Lisandro Martinez – Argentina

The complement to Romero in a combative centre-back pairing for the champions, Argentina’s Copa America success was built on their defensive axis. La Albiceleste did not concede a single goal with Martinez on the pitch this summer as the defender bounced back from a frustrating club campaign to thrive.

After a long period of unconvincing defensive options, Argentina might just boast the best central defensive duo in international football right now.

Left-back: Jon Aramburu – Venezuela

Copa America can produce breakout stars and Jon Aramburu has made himself a household name this summer. The full-back made just five league starts for Real Sociedad last season but impressed in a Venezuela team that reached the quarter-finals.

He made 26 tackles in just three games, recorded an assist, made two goal-line clearances, and won a penalty, with his all-action energy and defensive grit shining through. Still just 21 and able to cover either flank, Aramburu has placed himself the transfer thoughts of teams this summer.

Midfield: Manuel Ugarte – Uruguay

Patrolled the park with trademark bite as Uruguay agonisingly missed out on a place in the final.

After a mixed first season at Paris Saint-Germain, Ugarte found his form back in the colours of the national team. He led the Copa America for tackles won and provided the safety blanket behind Federico Valverde in midfield, as Marcelo Bielsa’s team emerged as one of the most impressive in the competition.

Midfield: James Rodriguez – Colombia

James Rodriguez’s renaissance was arguably the story of the Copa America as the Colombia creator rolled back the years. The 33-year-old set a Copa America record of six assists as Colombia reached the final for the first time in 23 years, earning the official Player of the Tournament award.

Class, as ever, is permanent and Rodriguez was a pleasure to watch.

Right-wing: Jacob Shaffelburg – Canada

Canada caused a surprise to reach the semi-finals in their Copa America debut with Jacob Shaffelburg one of the success stories of Jesse Marsch’s side. A backup option when the tournament began, Shaffelburg broke into the team to take his chance.

The winger was a menace for opposition teams all tournament with only three players managing more progressive carries and carries into the penalty area. Shaffelburg’s stock has risen sharply this summer and Nashville SC could face a fight to hold onto him.

Left-wing: Luis Diaz – Colombia

A bright tournament ended with a subdued final performance from the Liverpool winger, who often borders between brilliant and frustrating.

Diaz was crucial to Colombia’s challenge as Los Cafeteros finished as runners-up, scoring twice, and exhibited his usual mix of work rate and wing wizardry. If Arne Slot can get a tune from the 27-year-old next season and neaten up his decision-making in the final third, he could flourish under the new manager.

Forward: Salomon Rondon – Venezuela

Solomon Rondon fired Venezuela into the quarter-finals as the veteran netted three times in four appearances at Copa America 2024.

The 34-year-old’s goals included this outrageous strike against Canada, with Rondon remaining his nation’s chief goal threat.

The former Newcastle and West Brom forward had an excellent season with Mexico’s Pachuca in 2023-24, winning the CONCACAF Champions Cup and leading scorer award, though few envisaged such success on this stage.

Forward: Lautaro Martinez – Argentina

Lautaro Martinez headed into the tournament off the back of his best season to date with Inter Milan, having won the Cappocannoniere award as the league’s leading scorer in their Serie A title-winning campaign.

Martinez had to make do with an impact role for much of the Copa America but certainly made his appearances count. He scored five goals to win the Golden Boot, including the decisive goal off the bench in the final win over Colombia. He averaged a goal every 44.2 minutes at this summer’s tournament.
