AC Milan and Inter have opened a competition for designers who are interested in creating the new San Siro, and four participants are in the running.

Things are once again progressing with new plans for San Siro, and it seems that the clubs are taking the next needed step by finding a designer for the project, which needs to define an era, like San Siro did and still does.

According to a report from Corriere della Sera this morning, there are four international designers in the running for the job, with a decision expected within the next month.

The first idea comes from Norman Foster’s company Foster + Partners, the ‘star’ architect from Britain. He designed the Apple Store in Piazza Liberty in Milan, and the headquarters in Cupertino. Furthermore, his bid is done with Manica, a consortium who specialise in sports facilities, most recently the construction of the new Camp Nou.

Herzog & de Meuron are also in contention it seems. Previously the company designed the Allianz Arena, which will host this year’s Champions League final, whilst they created the Fondazione Feltrinelli in Porta Nuova.

Bdp would partner with Bjarke Ingles Group (Big) to form the third designer team – the British studio created projects for some of the stadiums in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup, whilst the Danes created ‘several’ sports facilities in the United Sates and the Citywave project in Milano.

Finally, Populous are back in the running, after their involvement in the La Cattedrale project in 2021 – the American group specialise in sport and have worked on facilities for Venezia and Como recently.
