Real Madrid suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final meeting at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday. Declan Rice’s brace and a goal from Mikel Merino made the difference in the second half as the Whites were comprehensively outplayed and are on the brink of elimination from the European Cup heading into next week’s second leg.
There was a visible gulf in the tactical fluidity of both sides, with Los Blancos falling short in creativity, discipline and intensity with and without the ball. There are 90 more minutes to be played at the Santiago Bernabeu next Wednesday but with a three-goal deficit to overcome, an arrear that the Whites have not pegged back in 50 years, the writing might already be on the wall.
Before their league clash against Deportivo Alaves on Sunday, here is a look at the player ratings from the game in London.
Player Ratings
Thibaut Courtois – 8/10
The best Real Madrid player on the pitch by some distance, Courtois made five saves and was on top of his game besides being undone by three very good finishes by Arsenal and some poor defending by his teammates.
Federico Valverde – 6.5/10
Valverde was not able to make enough inroads offensively but did a great job against Gabriel Martinelli at the back as he won three tackles, four duels and was not dribbled past even once.
Raul Asencio – 6.5/10
Asencio made eight clearances and five recoveries. He also made some important clearances in the first half but his man marking could have been slightly better off Arsenal’s set pieces.
Antonio Rudiger – 5.5/10
Rudiger was troubled by Merino’s movement on a few occasions and surprisingly, he looked off colour when defending set pieces, which are Arsenal’s biggest strength, in Madrid’s box.
David Alaba – 6/10
As with Valverde, Alaba did not help much when going forward but had tabs on Bukayo Saka although the Englishman did have the better of him on a couple of occasions early in the game.
Eduardo Camavinga – 5.5/10
Camavinga started the first half very well but was given problems by Martin Odegaard charging into the final third and Saka’s inward runs in the second period. He made the foul that led to one of Rice’s goals and was sent off for a second yellow card as his frustration got the better of him.
Luka Modric – 5/10
Modric had a 93% passing accuracy but played a very safe game all round. He struggled to deal with the physicality and pace of the midfield battle before being unsurprisingly withdrawn in the second half.
Jude Bellingham – 7/10
Bellingham had to help out on the left with Alaba and Vinicius not linking up well, whilst also having to ensure the team is not outnumbered in midfield. He did all of it well and also made a superb pass to Kylian Mbappe in the first half, which the Frenchman failed to finish.
Rodrygo Goes – 4/10
Rodrygo helped defensively like he always does but was extremely poor when in possession. He lacked any effectiveness with the ball and had no dribble or shot on target.
Kylian Mbappe – 4/10
Mbappe missed a very good chance and though he had a couple of decent moments on the ball, none of them were too influential or helped the team in getting anywhere offensively.
Vinicius Junior – 3/10
Another very bad game by Vinicius, who did nothing to help without the ball. When in possession, he was unable to get past Jurrien Timber and in a two-on-one situation in the first half which should have led to a Madrid goal, he hit his attempted pass to Mbappe directly at William Saliba.
Substitutes
Lucas Vazquez – 5/10
Vazquez was not involved in the 20 minutes he had on the pitch but was positioned poorly in yet another goal Real Madrid conceded, as he did not track Myles Lewis-Skelly’s run before he crossed to Merino.
Fran Garcia – 6.5/10
A promising cameo from Fran Garcia, who created a chance quickly after coming on and won a tackle, duel and made a recovery in only 10 minutes on the pitch.
Brahim Diaz – N/A
Brahim was on the pitch for a very short duration as he came on 85 minutes into the game.
