Now, it looks the 28-year-old is set to leave Preston this month as Coventry are applying the final touches to the deal.

The report from Football Insider states, that Maguire will be joining the Sky Blues on a deal until the end of the season.

Mark Robins is keen to add more attack to his frontline, as Coventry have let Martyn Waghorn leave for Huddersfield Town this month, while Matt Godden and Callum O’Hare have both picked up injuries that will see them sidelined.

The Sky Blues have one of the worst scoring rates in the Championship this season, as Robins’ men have only scored 29 goals in their 27 league games, meaning they are 19th in the scoring charts.

Maguire has been at Preston since the summer of 2017, when he joined from Cork City. During his time in Lancashire, he has made 170 appearances for the club, scoring 24 goals and providing 18 assists.

However, this season, the 28-year-old has found himself down the pecking order at the club, as he’s only made 10 appearances in the Championship so far, with the majority of them being substitute appearances. The Republic of Ireland striker has failed to make a matchday squad since the Championship returned after the World Cup break.

The Verdict

It is clear to see that Coventry needs reinforcements this month in attack, and looking to sign a player like Maguire is probably a smart move.

The 28-year-old knows what the Championship is all about, having played in it for six years, and with the type of striker Maguire is, he could be the perfect fit for Robins’ team.

Maguire will bring experience with him, while also being the type of player who is quick and direct with the ball and, over the years in the league, has been known to be a handle for many opposition defences.
