Paris Saint-Germain have been eliminated from the Champions League tonight, as they fell 2-0 against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. Goals from Eric Choupo-Moting and Serge Gnabry further strengthened the Bavarians’ lead following their first leg 1-0 win at Parc des Princes three weeks ago. For the Christophe Galtier-led side, it is a season-defining blow as neither Kylian Mbappé nor Lionel Messi stepped up to the occasion, despite a promising first half.
Speaking to broadcasters Canal+ in the wake of the final whistle, Portuguese midfielder Danilo Pereira, who held his own tonight, acknowledged the hosts’ supremacy. “Unfortunately, we have to say that Bayern were stronger than us.” The former FC Porto player lamented the opportunities PSG missed in the first half to go level in the tie, and the mistakes that allowed Bayern to reach the quarter-finals. “It’s tough to bow out this way, but that’s the Champions League.”
Danilo went on to acknowledge Bayern’s decisive physicality. “Tonight, we did not win that many duels. When we play like this, it’s difficult. I have no words.” PSG boss Galtier will need to find the right ones to rebuild his side’s confidence.
