Blackburn Rovers have made just two signings in January so far, but it is evident that they are lacking depth and quality

Blackburn Rovers icon David Dunn has urged owners the Venky's to invest in the first-team squad before the January transfer window closes.

John Eustace’s side lost 2-0 to Coventry City on Tuesday night, which saw the Lancahsire outfit drop to sixth in the Championship table.

The Lancashire outfit are still firmly in the mix for a play-off place, and will be aiming to finish inside the top six for the first time since suffering top flight relegation in 2012, but they have won just one of their last eight league matches.

So far this winter, Dion Sanderson has arrived on loan from Birmingham City and Adam Forshaw has added to Eustace's midfield options after joining from Plymouth Argyle, but despite selling both Adam Wharton and Sammie Szmodics in the last 12 months, Blackburn don't appear to have much in the way of cash to spend.

David Dunn, who played 378 times for Rovers in his career and also had a stint as first-team coach after his playing career was over, has called for Blackburn to go into the market and make more signings in order to help Eustace amid a series of injury issues.

The former midfielder believes that Rovers need to add new players to the side to help with the promotion battle in the second half of the campaign, and that will require the help of Blackburn's estranged owners.

“It’ll be an interesting couple of days,” Dunn told BBC Radio Lancashire, via Twitter.

“Can we get any deals done, whether that's a loan or permanent for the weekend? We need bodies.

“We needed bodies before [the defeat to Coventry] to help the team.

“We need bodies more than ever now."

Callum Brittain was the latest player to add his name to the injury list at Ewood Park on Tuesday evening, with the defender taken off at half-time with a hamstring issue, as Eustace revealed.

Commanding centre-back Danny Batth also had to be withdrawn through injury, whilst Sondre Tronstad will be sidelined for weeks - Joe Rankin-Costello could join the Norwegian midfielder after picking up an ankle issue against Coventry too, although he managed to battle on until full-time.

Depth is now a real issue in certain areas for Rovers, who need some fresh faces in and fast - for now though, it looks unlikely that any will arrive ahead of their trip to Bristol City this weekend.

Blackburn Rovers should back John Eustace given their promotion chances

Blackburn have done a poor job of investing in managers in the past, and it was a big factor in Jon Dahl Tomasson’s departure 12 months ago.

But now is as good a time as any for the club to dip into the market and look to make some signings because they have a genuine chance at a top six finish if they can get back to winning matches of football.

Eustace has earned the backing of the owners with the impact he’s had on the club over the last year since replacing Tomasson, whose explosive exit from Ewood Park has certainly been forgotten about now thanks to how good Eustace has been.

If they don’t bring any more signings in though, then it will be a very disappointing month for supporters, and it will send a negative signal to the manager.
