Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, has assured that the club’s current squad under coach Hansi Flick is strong enough, with no immediate plans to make additions in the January transfer window.

In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Deco explained that both the management and coaching staff are confident in the depth of the squad and its ability to compete at the highest level.

What are Barcelona’s plans for the January window?

Deco addressed concerns about potential departures and the need for new signings in January. He mentioned that discussions about the squad have been ongoing since the summer, and the team is in a solid position.

“We have been talking since the summer. The squad is fine,” he began saying

One of the key challenges earlier in the season was the unexpected injury to goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. However, this issue was quickly addressed with another goalkeeper, Inaki Pena, who has stepped up admirably in Ter Stegen’s absence.

“We had the problem of Ter Stegen that we had not foreseen but that was covered by another goalkeeper.”

Deco also highlighted the upcoming return of important players like Gavi and Frenkie de Jong, who were both sidelined due to injury.

While the absences of defenders Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen were not anticipated, Deco reassured fans that they would soon return to action as well.

With these players set to be back in the squad, Deco believes Barcelona will be fully equipped, with strong coverage across all positions.

“At the beginning of the season, we knew that we would recover Gavi at some point and Frenkie. We did not expect Araujo and Christensen but they will also recover.

“Soon we will have Christensen, Araujo, Ferran and Eric available, that will be four more players. I think we have a fairly well-covered squad in all positions,” he said.

It must be noted that there have been rumours about the club potentially signing a new goalkeeper. Deco firmly rejected these speculations, praising Inaki Pena for his excellent performances so far.

He also confirmed that once ter Stegen is back to full fitness, the goalkeeper hierarchy at Barcelona will return to normal, with ter Stegen resuming his starting role.
