His departure this January would be a big blow to the club, especially as the youngster is coming to the end of his contract this summer.

That means a fee received from any sale may not be maximum value, which could leave the club struggling to find a suitable replacement.

Callum Paterson is another player that has been linked with a move away from the League One side this January, with Scottish side Hearts linked with a deal to sign the forward.

Paterson’s contract is also set to expire in the summer, meaning Wednesday are now at risk of losing key players in the squad for minimal fees.

This will hurt the club’s ability to find proper replacements in January if they are sold, or it leaves them at risk of losing these players on a free at the end of the campaign.

Given the risk that certain loan players may also be recalled mid-season, Wednesday are at risk of leaving themselves a little light across the squad if things don’t fall the right way this January.
