FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division club Derby County have completed the signing of former Birmingham City goalkeeper Lucy Jones on a free transfer.

Ewe Rams announced news of the transfer via a post on their official club website this evening.

Jones joins Derby County after leaving former club Birmingham City earlier this summer. The 19-year-old spent six years with the Blues in which she worked her way through the various youth age groups to the fringes of the first team squad. Jones made her senior debut for Birmingham City as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat to Leicester City in a Barclays Women’s Super League fixture in February 2022. That was her only first team outing during her time at St Andrew’s.

Jones is highly-rated but she needs regular game time to grow. She will now be hopeful of producing her best form in the third tier with Derby County.

After joining Ewe Rams, Jones said “Everything’s amazing. Settling into the squad, all of the girls are amazing, Sam [Griffiths] is brilliant, so I’m really looking forward to the season.

“The facilities are lovely, the pitches and the enviroment that it creates; it’s just a very nice place to be.

“It’d be nice if we can stay in the cup [this season], get to the final and win it. As a goalkeeper, clean sheets are a big thing for me and my defence too. I’m hoping that we can push for as many clean sheets as possible throughout the season.”

Jones is one of four signings to be announced by Derby County today.
