Diego Alves proved the hero for Flamengo as they retained the Supercopa do Brasil with a win on penalties over Palmeiras on Sunday.
The 35-year-old goalkeeper saved four spot-kicks in the shootout after the sides finished level after 90 minutes.
Centre-back Rodrigo Caio struck the winning penalty as the Rubro-Negro added the Supercopa to the Brasilerão crown they claimed in February.
It was an extra special occasion for Alves, who missed most of the title run-in due to injury.
Youngster Hugo Souza deputised admirably, which led to reports that the senior stopper might look elsewhere for regular action.
But Alves chose to stay and fight for his place, and was happy he had done so.
And, speaking to SporTV, he revealed that it was the second time in his career he had produced such shootout heroics.
“Yes, with all humility, in a tournament in Europe I saved four,” Alves said.
“But more than the penalties it was the meaning for us. For me in particular, because I went through a troubled time.
“This goes to the people who wanted me to stay, it was my wish to stay at Flamengo, a lot of people made a lot of effort for me to continue.
“I am happy to repay this with the title that this group deserves.”
Alves spent 10 years in Spain earlier in his career, setting records at Valencia where he repelled an incredible 23 penalties during his six seasons at the Mestella.
