One sporting director has revealed this week how Chelsea almost signed a world class superstar to replace striker Didier Drogba, who the club thought needed phasing out at that point.

In a quite surprising story, it sounds like Chelsea were making plans to replace an ageing Drogba with another big name, but nothing actually ended up coming to fruition with it.

EXCLUSIVE! Surprise Chelsea player impressing training ground staff, but not for his quality….

Speaking on the Obi One Podcast this week, former Chelsea director Michael Emenalo has revealed that he almost signed a player who went on to become Manchester City’s best striker at the time for Chelsea in the early 2010s to replace Didier Drogba.

According to Emenalo, Chelsea were very close to signing Sergio Aguero from Atletico Madrid at one point.

Chelsea’s plan was to bring Aguero to the club and phase out Didier Drogba.

Aguero could have been at Chelsea

Aguero was one of the best of all time

“Who’s the one that got away? Who is the one where you would wake up in a cold sweat and think, oh if only we’d landed him?” Emenalo was asked.

“Sergio Aguero. We came very, very close, and that was the one, he was 20 and the idea was to have him with Didier Drogba and and to phase Drogba out you gradually because we anticipated that Didier would go until he was 35,” Emenalo said.

“Mr Ancelotti wanted that also and had a plan, but I won’t go into detail of why it didn’t happen.”

Aguero had been linked with Chelsea a few times before to be honest but of course, he ended up going to City and the rest is history.

Drogba left Chelsea and then of course had a second stint back at the club and even at the tender older age, he was still making an impact and scoring goals.
