Speaking after the EURO 2024 draw, Domenico Tedesco was asked about the availability of two of Belgium’s veteran players; Axel Witsel and Toby Alderweireld. As reported by HLN, the Red Devils head coach said ‘It’s good to know it’s an option in case of emergency, like with Toby’.
The hiring of Tedesco after the departure of long time head coach Roberto Martinez was seen as the start of a new era for the Belgian national team. Alderweireld announced his retirement from the national team, but the experienced defender has just come off a strong season with Antwerp, which saw them win their first title since 1957. 34-year-old Witsel has 130 caps and 12 goals for the national team, but he has been replaced by Amadou Onana. The Everton midfielder is expected to be a key player for Tedesco in Germany.
Belgium have been drawn alongside Romania and Slovakia in Group E. They will find out who will join them in March, with Israel, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine and Iceland battling it out for a place in EURO 2024.
